The College of the Holy Cross, more commonly referred to as simply Holy Cross, is an undergraduate Roman Catholic liberal arts college located in Worcester, which is the county seat of Worcester County, situated in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population estimated at a number of more than 182 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in New England. Due to its location in Central Massachusetts, Worcester is often referred to as the ‘’Heart of the Commonwealth’’, being mostly noted for its mill era Victorian architecture.
Holy Cross was founded by Benedict Joseph Fenwick, SJ, second Bishop of Boston, as a school for boys, under the auspices of the Society of Jesus, being today one of the 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), also being part of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium (COWC). According to a 2008 edition of the US News & World Report, Holy Cross is 33rd among US liberal arts schools, being the only Catholic college among the top 50 liberal arts schools on the U.S. News list.
The athletic teams from Holy Cross are known as the Holy Cross Crusaders, who compete in 27 varsity sports the NCAA Division I level (FCS for football), and NCAA Division I Hockey, being members of the Patriot League, the Atlantic Hockey Association, the Division III Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference in women’s hockey, and the Big South Conference in women’s golf. The Crusaders have won 2 NCAA team national championships, in 1947, in men’s basketball and in men’s baseball, in 1952, the baseball team being the only team from the northeastern part of the United States to have won the College World Series.
